Sealant, SiO2, wax or liquid PPF: what lasts

Protection is what keeps corrected paint looking corrected. It is also where people overspend, either on a product they will not maintain or on one that does less than they think. Here is the honest ladder.

Spray sealant

Fastest to apply and the easiest to live with. Spray it on a wet or dry panel, wipe, done. A good spray sealant beads water and adds gloss for a couple of months, and because it goes on in minutes you can top it every few washes without thinking about it. P&S Bead Maker is the one detail shops reach for, and it comes in gallons for a reason.

SiO2 protectant

SiO2, silicon dioxide, is the ingredient behind ceramic coatings. In a spray or liquid protectant it gives a harder, slicker layer than a traditional sealant and more durability, usually several months, without the prep and cure a true coating needs. P&S Defender and Ardex Hydro Gloss both sit here.

Wax

Wax gives the warmest look on dark paint and is forgiving to apply. It also lasts the shortest time, a few weeks of real weather. If you enjoy waxing a car it is a fine choice. If you want to apply something and forget it, choose a sealant or SiO2.

Liquid paint protection film

Liquid PPF is a different category. It sprays on like a coating but cures into a thick, self-healing film that absorbs rock chips and light scratches, the things a ceramic coating cannot stop. It needs clean, corrected paint, controlled application and a cure window, which is why it is sold with training. NANO PRO LPF is the one we carry, and the installer training is listed next to it.

Which one

Daily driver, minimal effort: spray sealant after every second wash. Show car or a fresh correction you want to keep: SiO2 protectant, topped with a spray sealant. Front end on a highway car: liquid PPF on the hood, bumper and mirrors. Any of them beats bare clear coat.
